Fibromyalgia symptoms and diagnosis

Have you just been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia or been suffering from this condition for many years?

Fibromyalgia affects an estimated 2 percent of the population, the cause of which is not completely understood. Symptoms that you may experience are as follows – the main one being pain that moves around the body and is present in all four quadrants of the body for a minimum of 3 months:

  • chronic pain
  • debilitating fatigue
  • difficulty sleeping
  • anxiety and depression
  • joint stiffness
  • chronic headaches and jaw pain
  • difficulty swallowing
  • dryness in mouth, nose, and eyes
  • hypersensitivity to odours, bright lights, and loud noises
  • inability to concentrate (“fibro fog”)
  • incontinence
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • numbness or tingling in the fingers and feet
  • obesity
  • painful menstrual cramps
  • poor circulation in hands and feet (Raynaud’s)
  • restless legs syndrome

People with Fibromyalgia often find their symptoms change over time. The symptoms may be worse during times of stress or more extreme exercise.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has the distinct advantage of being able to diagnose in a different way to conventional medicine, therefore being able to treat the multiple and often changing location and symptoms associated with Fibromyalgia , in a very personal and individualised way. In other words – if ten different people come into the clinic, all with the diagnosis of “Fibromyalgia ”, a detailed case history is taken on each one. The diagnosis, treatment, dietary and lifestyle advice and herbs will be very different for each person. This is because everyone will have a unique set of symptoms, with unique stressors and unique medical health backgrounds.
